Another item has arrived recently into the Collection. It is a montage of pleasant scenes from the French Riviera.
It is upon looking at the back of the postcard that I noticed something rather unique:
[top] “Souvenir de Bormes les Mimosas” [Translation: Souvenir of Bormes-les-Mimosas]
[bottom] “Lumière et beaute de la Côte d’Azur” [Translation: Light and beauty of the French Riviera]
“Dear Glen, this summer we’re spending our holidays in South France. We the beautiful landscape and the towns with their markets and restaurants and wines… the sun and the sea. Viele leibe Grusse von X”
This donor is one of a handful of people in the hundred plus postcard senders I have in my collection that consistently writes sideways! Oddly enough, most of the other sideways writers are either from approximately 1910 (when postcard writing on the backside was still fairly new) or German (as this sender is). Right on!
