Yesterday, I mentioned the train trip we took across Canada with our baby. En route to Vancouver, we stopped off for a couple days in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I’ve always loved the great old château train hotels across Canada. I’ve been in lots of them (the lobbies that is) and even stayed at the Royal York in Toronto once, but otherwise the hotels are out of my price range. Surprisingly, not the case for Winnipeg, however.
We spent a couple nights at the Fort Garry Hotel. Here’s the postcard of the hotel we sent several people to demonstrate our fine temporary digs:
To be honest, we weren’t so fond of Winnipeg. But WE LOVED THE HOTEL! Here’s what we wrote home about:
“The Fort Garry Hotel a historic landmark since 1911 is situated in downtown Winnipeg.”
“Greetings from Winnipeg. We’re staying at this hotel – the best in the city! It’s super posh and has an awesome breakfast (included). This may sound expensive but this is Winnipeg so you can live like kings here on a pauper’s budget (like Slovakia). We’d move here permanently but I hear the bugs are infernal. We were surprised at how dead downtown Winnipeg was even during rush hour, but we don’t mind as we enjoy just hanging out at this fab hotel. Back on the train tomorrow. [Our kid] was the hit of the train. It’s mostly British seniors and they love her – even our compartment neighbours who had to put with her frequent, excited yelling. The food on the train is great and [our kid] willingly provides the train’s entertainment.”
Gotta love the stamp, eh? Very Canadian to have stamps of different fishing lures – although Mickey Finn normally refers to something slipped into someone’s drink to knock them out.
We sent the same postcard to a bunch of people, and here’s my partner’s perspective (she used the pretty Canadian flowers stamps):
“Hi. We’re having a great trip so far. It’s lots of fun having our own compartment on the train – there’s space for [our kid] to play and crawl around. We just spent 2 days at this awesome hotel in Winnipeg – the best breakfast buffets ever. The only problem is that [our kid] finally decided to cut a tooth- leading to one sleepless night so far. Also Winnipeg is VERY cold. It snowed yesterday. Hope all is well at home.”
BTW, the hotel’s breakfast buffet is indeed THE BEST BREAKFAST BUFFET EVER!!! (It made up for Winnipegs’s disappointing, if fabled, perogies.)
