Back in May, I went to Toronto Comic Arts Festival. It was a great (and free) event. There were lots of famous and awesome local and international cartoonists there. My daughter and I are huge fans of graphic literature, so it was cool to meet some of our famous cartoonists.
They even had a couple free postcards. This one below is from the graphic book series Amulet by Kazu Kibuishi. My daughter and I have been reading this for years so we were excited to see this postcard:
I also got this postcard for Narwhal: Unicorn of the Sea.
It has the best back design of any postcard – a MAZE:
Earlier this summer, I was in Peterborough, Ontario. It’s one of my favourite places in Ontario and that’s not just because they have the Canoe Museum and the world’s best jingle for a car dealership.
My in-laws live there and I’ve been several times and rarely encountered anywhere that sells postcards. But thanks to Wal-mart I found this postcard highlighting Peterborough’s claim-to-fame, their famous lift-locks!
Here’s another sample from my winter sojourn in the south. We spent only a short time in the island of St. Martin this time, but I found lots of good postcards (as well as going to I to an awesome Star Wars museum!)
I particularly like this postcard, below, as it captures a segment of the place’s history.
Here is the back of postcard which tells about the history pertaining to the front image.
Postcard caption:
“For Amsterdam, St. Maarten, Netherlands Antilles
The cannons of Fort Amsterdam have witnessed many fierce battles between the Dutch and the Spanish, English and Portuguese navies. The island actually changed flags many times. In one such battle, Peter Stuyvesant, who later became Governor of New Amsterdam (now New York), lost his lag here. ”
Earlier this year, I got some great postcards from my postcard penpal on his trip to Italy. Fortunately, for me he made a trip to the bordering country of Slovenia. I love postcards from Slovenia and I’ve only got one other in the Collection, so this was a real treat. And then there’s the postcard itself in all its shiny glory:
Here’s the real backside (ha, pun intended!):
Postcard message:
“Hi Glen:
On my last day here I got the chance to spend the afternoon in Capodistria, Slovenia. Awesome place, if you ever have the opportunity you should visit. Also, as soon as I saw this postcard I knew it was perfect for you!
Cheers.”
I’m taking a few minutes break from a huge project to relax with my beloved postcards, which I’ve neglected shamefully over the past few months. So I’m just now getting around to showcasing some fine additions to the Collection from my last expedition, which was way back in the winter.
Below is a fine example from the U.S. Virgin Islands:
I’m particularly fond of my recent Bahamian find below that I picked up in Nassau:
I didn’t see any postcards of their famous pink government buildings, but this one was the only I could find that featured their buildings. The photographer did a great job on this one as it has a real tranquil and spiritual dimension to it rarely seen in postcard imagery.
