It’s Mardi Gras today! When I was a kid in Guelph, Ontario we called it “Pancake Day” and ate pancakes for breakfast and again at school – I loved it. But the ultimate place to celebrate is New Orleans’ Mardi Gras party
I’ve never been to Mardi Gras, but I was there a few days afterwards and it was still a blast.
One of my family members has been there for Mardi Gras in 1967 and sent this postcard home:
This float is from the Rex Parade. The party looks so orderly and restrained, in contrast to eye witness accounts:
Postcard caption:
[Top]”A colourful Mardi Gras Float pausing in front of one of the many reviewing stands lining the sidewalks, along the route of this colourful and historic pageant, New Orleans, Louisiana.”
[Bottom] “New Orleans – America’s Most Intriguing City”
Postcard message:
“Hi. We are at the Mardi Gras, boy what a crowd just like the [Canadian National] Exhibition only worst there was over 1/2 a million people there and they all want the place where I was. I got a lot of beads and junk. Leaving for Texas early to-morrow.”
Enjoy your pancakes, beads, or more adult celebrations today.
