My grandmother died over this past weekend. I spent a lot of time with my grandparents growing up. My favourite memories of them is going up for summer break to their house in Clinton, visiting their trailer by Lake Huron, and travelling with them for beach holidays in the southern U.S.
Over the years, we exchanged many postcards. So I wanted to post one hear to remember her by. In searching through my collection, this is the first one I found from her – and it seems appropriate
Our family particularly loved Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. I fondly remember jumping in the waves with grandma, playing canasta by the pool with her and Grandpa, and then all of us going out for buffet supper. So Myrtle Beach does seem like a good heaven.
Grandma wrote most of the postcards. She sent this one to me just as I started my first weeks of university. Here’s the reverse side of the postcard:
“The world famous sea coast of Myrtle Beach, S.C.”
“Hi Glen: We are having a good time at Myrtle Beach. Wish you were here with us. The weather is great – in the 90s every day. We live in the nice warm water and whirlpool. Alice and Oz are enjoying it too. First time down here for them. Hope you like the University and what you are taking this year. See you when you get home. Again, love. Grandpa and Grandma. ”
My grandfather passed away a little over two years ago. I inherited his postcard collection, as I noted in the post “Remembering Homer“.
Here are my grandparents with my daughter a few years ago at their trailer:
Goodbye Grandma and Grandpa. Wish you were here!
