Today is Fat Tuesday, a.k.a. Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras, or as I knew it as a kid, pancake day. I had pancakes for supper and even my teachers at school would make us pancakes. I didn’t exactly understand why we ate pancakes specifically on this day, but I was up for it (and still am – particularly since maple syrup is one of the greatest foods ever discovered).
Apparently, we eat pancakes today as they combine milk, fat, sugar, and eggs – all foods traditionally given up for Lent (see Ask.com). I don’t have a postcard of pancakes, but I have one of a similar and even better dish – waffles! Enjoy:
This postcard is one of the largest of in my odd-shapes collection and it’s from Belgium (of course) – the country that has given more great culinary gifts to the world than any other! Here’s the flip side:
Postcard caption: “Waffles from Brussels and Liege”
“Greetings from Belgium, home of the waffle, french fries, and beer. I think you guys should move here. We are sitting in a brasserie having just finished off some Mikado Pannenkoeken crepes and [x] is drinking Kwak beer from a fancy glass with us, but went back to the hotel ’cause they couldn’t walk around ’cause they are so out of shape. Tomorrow we go to Bruges so we ‘ll stick them on a canal boat. Any way, some good news (for us at least) – Steve Coogan has a movie coming out Saturday called “The Parole Officer”. Maybe it’ll be released in Canada. It has a website. Ciao.”
Today has another reason to celebrate as it’s the 200th post of this blog! Good reasons for gluttonous celebrations tonight!
