The recent arrival below presents a slice of life from centuries passed:
I love medieval art – particularly illuminated manuscripts such as this one. But there is a special quality in this one that the writer points out:
Postcard caption (English version):
“A castle tower under construction. A detail from a late medieval manuscript.”
“Hello from Wales. We’ve visited Chepstow Castle and Tintern Abbey. I found this card at the Abbey but I’m disappointed to realise it’s from a German manuscript. I love the looks on their faces, good they didn’t hide how much life sucked.”
I also love the honesty of the artist in depicting the miserable existence back then (and often still is – I have encountered co-workers in the financial sector and people at academic conferences with similarly woeful expressions).
