In honour of Earth Day, here’s one of my favourite postcards:
The back of the postcard identifies this work as “Frame of Mind” by David Maisel. It’s a promo postcard for a French bottled water company. I picked it up from a rack in downtown Toronto several years ago and had it hanging up in my house for years as I love it so much.
I’m not sure how successful it is in terms of promoting bottled water. I think the man reflecting on nature is meant to lead one to associate how “natural” bottle watered is. Coming from a country with some of the cleanest, most drinkable water in the world I cannot understand the prevalence of bottled water. The resulting waste is awful for the environment and it commodifies (at a premium) a basic human right – access to water!
With my Earth Day rant now over, I love this postcard as the image is so powerful. It’s visually beautiful, but it also provokes the viewer to consider not only the absurdity of such a limited (enframed) view of nature but our entire way we humans view Nature.
Hence, I think it an excellent image for Earth Day.
