Last night, I was at an event and they handed out promotional postcards to attendees that were boring in both design and content. But I’ll keep it. I’m not judicious in my selection or retention: if it looks like a postcard it’s in. I’m not sure if this makes me an ultimate collector, hoarder, or postcard addict.
Originally, such freebie postcards (officially called giveaway postcards by deltiologists) were handed out mostly by hotels (and my collections has treasures of this type) but over the past couple decades lots of companies are doing it (although few hotels any more, oddly enough). I’ve got a bunch from racks at bars and restaurants – only a few of which are particularly good.
An Italian restaurant in Toronto near where I used to work on Toronto Street called Mercatto gave out the best ones I have ever seen however. Although they do play on stereotypes, they do connect well to the product and are definitely memorable.
